So you’ve made up your mind and decided to finally enroll yourself at the local gym. But, you find yourself faced with a very important question: what should you wear? While the main focus of going to the gym is to get fit and physical, there’s no denying that you will also have to pay attention to what you wear – whether it be for the purpose of style or comfort.
Gym clothes have certainly evolved over time, and we have seen everything from downright drab to completely extravagant. They come in a wide variety of styles, designs, colors, sizes, brands and prices too. The numerous choices may overwhelm you, but if you know what you need, you will certainly find the right gym clothes that are perfect to wear in the gym.
Comfort Is the Key
Most people choose style over comfort when it comes to choosing outfits. However, this should not be the case in the gym. Comfort should always be the number one concern since you will be sweating and moving excessively. It’s very important to choose items that are breathable (such as cotton) and moisture resistant. Most new sportswear and gym wear make use of fabrics with moisture wick technology that keeps you dry even while sweating in the gym.
Choose the Right Size
Aside from the fabric, the size and the fit of your fitness clothes also matters. If you’re a woman, you may consider skimpy shorts and sports bras or tight fitting stretch pants for yoga classes. Figure hugging gym wear may accentuate your figure, but make sure that it’s not too tight; otherwise it might limit your movement. You may also attract unwanted attention with extremely tight workout clothes. Gym clothes that are too loose, on the other hand, might also make it difficult for you to move. They may even get caught in machines, causing injury on your part. Thus, your apparel of choice should be the right fit to your form – not too tight and not too loose.
Choose the Right Clothes
It’s very important to choose the right choice for your type of exercise. Beach shorts may seem appropriate for lounging around in the pool, but if you’re serious about swimming, a proper swimming suit will give you more efficiency and will create less drag and resistance as you swim. If you’re doing yoga, a shirt that fits you well is recommended since loose shirts might be in the way of some positions.
Buy Several Pairs
If you plan to go to the gym on a regular basis (at least three times a week), then you will certainly need more than just one pair of gym clothes. Of course, you should also be prepared to do a lot of washing. You don’t want to find yourself bringing a dirty or sweaty pair of gym clothes, right?
The key to choosing gym clothes is by being practical. Most people may associate practicality with drabness, yet you can still be practical without having to sacrifice your fashion sense and style. While shopping for gym clothes, make sure to pick out essentials such as shorts, jogging pants and shirts (or tops for women) in neutral colors so that you can pair them up with other pieces. Black is a great color as it is slimming, and can be matched with a wide variety of colors as well. If your budget is limited, make sure that you choose items that you know you will want to wear regularly. If you like flaunting your toned arms, then sleeveless exercise tops may be a good choice for you. If you run regularly, then choose shorts that are of good quality and fit. If you’re not so keen on showing your belly in the entire gym, then you might want to steer away from midriff baring tops.
It doesn’t matter if your gym clothes of choice are cheap and affordable or extravagant and expensive. What’s important is that you choose ones that’s comfortable, looks right and fits just right, and you’re all set to go to the gym.
