Bay Area Fitness is a locally-owned gymnasium (complete with sauna, hot tub, outside pool, and cross-country running track) located on the East side of Belfast (Maine). Edward Flanders (a former Mr. Maine)is the sole owner and operator. He has owned this facility for a few decades even though for most of that time he also served as a seventh-grade teacher (homeroom, earth science). The location is up on the top of a hill and is beautiful in the summertime.

Ed believes in the "super-slow" technique to weight lifting. Everybody from high-schoolers to senior citizens work out at his facility. Though there are no classes as such, some use the building for the tanning bed and others prefer the wide selection of free weights and exercise machines (both for lifting and for cardiovascular).

The background music tends to be Nu Rock which is fairly abrasive (as the radio station emanates from a mountaintop a couple hours' drive from the gym). A solid gym experience can be had and there are group discounts (as well as holiday sales) to take advantage of.

A variety of inspirational sayings and mantras adorns the outside sign -- no excuse not to work out here!
